Many festivals are celebrated round the year in the town of Kumbakonam, but the town is famous for its “Mahamahan Festival”. Mahamahan festival is a Hindu festival which is celebrated in every 12 years, at Mahamahan Tank in Kumbakonam. Kasi Vishwanthar temple and Adi Kumbeswarar temple are located near Mahamahan Tank, thus, these temples also have their cultural importance due to Mahamahan festival. This festival is celebrated in Tamil Month “Masi” (February- March) in 12 years. A huge fair is organized near Mahamahan tank during the festival. Along with Mahamahan festival, Pongal, Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepavali, Ramzan and Christmas festivals are also celebrated in the town of Kumbakonam.  All these festivals are celebrated with grandeur and luster.

People of Kumbakonam

In the town of Kumbakonam, majority of the population are Hindus but Muslims and Christians also reside here. People in the town are predominantly The people mostly depend upon agriculture and rice production is the main activity in the town. There are some industries in the town which manufacture fertilizers. Kumbakonam is famous for the production of brass, bronze, copper and lead vessels, silk and cotton clothes, pottery and sugar. It is the main commercial center for Thanjavur district. Tourism has also become one of the sources of income of the people in the town. People in the town are very polite in behavior and give a very warm welcome and care to the tourists.

Cuisines of Kumbakonam

All the dishes in Kumbakonam are dominated by the rice as it is the main cuisine in South India. All the South- Indian dishes such as idli, dosas, uthapam, sambhar, rasam, upma, curd rice, tamarind and lemon rice, sweets, payasam, vegetarian and non- vegetarian meals are the part of cuisine of Kumbakonam. Sappadu is a heavy meal which is offered on banana leaf during some occasions.People love to serve the food to others as they believe it as a service to humanity.
